Fort Point is a wonderful, historic place to see. The builder of the Golden Gate Bridge designed the bridge over the top of the fort because he thought is was important to preserve. If you look closely at the bridge, there is "a bridge within the bridge" – an arch on the San Francisco side that saved the fort. Built in the mid 1800s, it is in remarkably good condition. They offer complimentary tours that take about 30 minutes – you can also wander around on your own. They have interesting displays in several of the rooms. They have 2 videos that are available to view: The building of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the other on the history of Fort Point. Both are worth seeing. Check the schedule as you arrive, don't miss the demonstration on how to light a cannon if fits your time frame. It takes only about 10 minutes, but is both informative and fun. Did you know it takes 8 men to accomplish the task? There is a gift shop, but no food service. Restrooms are located in a small building off the parking lot. Parking and entrance to the fort are both free. The view of the bridge is outstanding. It's very windy there — take a jacket. Plan on spending an hour and a half or two hours to fully cover this interesting place. Because it's part of the National Park Service, they have a website with additional information. Definately worth the time to visit.
